Copy and Add

Copying what your child says and then adding a new word or two on top helps to show your child what they could be saying, and also shows that you are listening and engaging with what they say

Observe, Wait, Listen (OWL)

It's easy to talk for our child or to add the words they might not be using. But it's also important to leave some space in your conversation for there to be periods of quiet. This may be the time when your child says or does something that shows that they are trying to communicate.

Top tip follow Lead.png

Letting your child choose a toy is an easy way of following their lead during play. Perhaps pick out three or four toys and have your child choose the one they would like to play with. Then you can join them, doing what they want to do with the toy.  This:

  • Shows your child that you are interested in them and what they are going to communicate to you.

  • Helps them to concentrate and listen to the language model you are giving them.

  • Helps them to understand as you are giving them the words and sentences related to their play.
